US Supports Direct Dialogue Between India and Pakistan To Resolve Kashmir Dispute

The US affirmed that it supports direct dialogue between Pakistan and India on the Kashmir issue and called for calm and restraint after Islamabad downgraded ties with New Delhi.

“We continue to support direct dialogue between India and Pakistan on Kashmir and other issues of concern,” the US State Department said in a statement.

Noting the broader implications of India’s Kashmir move, Washington further stated that it was closely “following India’s legislation regarding the new territorial status and governance of Jammu and Kashmir”.

“We continue to be concerned about reports of detentions and the continued restrictions on the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.  We urge respect for individual rights, compliance with legal procedures, and inclusive dialogue with those affected,” added the statement.

“We call upon on all parties to maintain peace and stability along the Line of Control (LoC), including taking firm and resolute steps to combat cross-border terrorism,” the US State Department further said.

Earlier, United States Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) – Alice Wells rejected Indian press reports which claimed that India had informed Washington about the revocation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.
