According to reports, five Para-SF commandos of the Indian Army were killed over the weekend along the Line of Control in Kashmir after an extraordinary fight with the terrorists who had infiltrated into India, the Indian Army said on Monday.

The encounter took place in the Keran sector on Sunday with all five terrorists killed. The bodies of the Para-SF commandos and the terrorists were found barely two to three metres from each other, an Indian Army officer said.

In a statement on Monday, the army said all five terrorists were killed in “an intense hand-to-hand battle.” “The Indian Army launched an audacious operation at the LoC and attacked militants in a close-quarter battle in heavy snow, neutralising the entire infiltrating batch of five.

Four soldiers under the command of a junior commissioned officer (JCO) from the very elite Para-SF units were airdropped near the LoC after intelligence on the militants was received,” the statement said.

Based on data from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), the Para-SF were shuttled to the nearest battalion headquarters by air as the location was cut off due to heavy snow in the area.

In the early hours of Sunday, the commandos began following the footprints. The commandos divided into two groups with one of them not recognising that they were on a cornice.

The ParaSF commandos in the second group rushed to provide assistance to the first group who were locked in a hand-to-hand combat with the terrorists. In the ensuing combat, the ParaSF commandos were victorious in killing all the infiltrators, the officer added.

The Indian Army’s wing of Special Force commandos called Para SF was created in 1966 during the Indo-Pakistan War (1965). They came in existence under a maverick military endeavour undertaken by Major Megh Singh who constituted a small group of lethal soldiers to operate behind enemy lines and thwart enemy defences.

The team was initially called the ‘Meghdoot Force’ owing to the ad-hoc nature of the operation under Major Megh Singh. This group was disbanded and joined with the Parachute Regiment, which became the first special operations unit.
