After India, Now Americans, Turks, Israelis Clapping, Appreciating Health Care Workers

Akin to scenes in Italy and Spain, Indians emerged from their balconies at 5 p.m. on Sunday cheering, ringing bells as per the directives of  PM Narendra Modi to express appreciation to those who have been fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, PM Modi earlier proposed the 14-day quarantine during a national address on Thursday, as coronavirus cases in India and across the world continued to surge.

In the US, a campaign has been trending on Twitter to demonstrate appreciation for health care workers. #Solidarityat8 is urging people to go on their balconies or open their windows and doors at 8 p.m. and cheer the people who continue to work in hospitals and other medical facilities.

Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel are being called heroes for their commitment as they continue working in an increasingly precarious situation — with protective gear in short supply.

The movement started in other countries that were impacted by coronavirus before the US. In India, President Ram Nath Kovind and senior ministers stood in their courtyards in the capital, New Delhi, on Sunday, showing their appreciation with a standing ovation.

Citizens in cities across Turkey clapped, whistled and appreciated their health care workers in the country.

Israelis cheered from their balconies and windows on Thursday night to show their gratitude for their health care workers.

There are more than 3780,000 cases of coronavirus, globally. Europe is now at the epicentre of the pandemic and the US is facing a surge in cases.  The virus is spreading rapidly in many countries, with more than 270,000 confirmed cases outside China, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.
