At least 257 People Killed in Il-76 Algeria Plane Crash 2018

Minimum 257 people are believed to be killed in the Algeria Plane Crash when a military plane crashed near the Algerian capital, Algiers, according to the state media. The aircraft crashed near the Boufarik Air Base, and amongst the dead are ten crew members. The exact cause of Algeria Plane Crash is still unknown. The military transport Il-76 crashed shortly after take-off from an airbase near the capital of the country.

It was not clear if there were any survivors. This is one of the most catastrophic crash since 2014 when 298 passengers were killed after a Malaysian Airlines plane was shot down over Ukraine.

Algerian TV station Ennahar displayed pictures of smoke emanating from the plane’s fuselage, bent to one side, with part of the aircraft sticking out above the trees. Dozens of dead bodies were seen in bags as paramedics and firefighters worked relentlessly at the crash site.

An onlooker said, he was at home when he heard a massive explosion, and drove with a friend to the site, where they tried to douse the fire and assist the victims

Algeria has a dubious aviation safety record. In 2014, a Hercules C-130 carrying air force personnel’s and their families crashed killing 77 people. Later in 2014, an Air Algérie flight crashed in Mali while travelling between Bukina Faso and Algeria, killing all 116 passengers.
