Cambodia-Thailand Railway Line Starts After 45 Years

Cambodia-Thailand Railway Line has commenced operations after a gap of 45 years. Cambodia reestablished the decisive stretch of a railway line running from the Phnom Penh in Cambodia to Thailand, the first time the stretch has been operational in 45 years. This is a historic moment, said Cambodian transport minister Sun Chanthol.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided a loan of $13 million to reconstruct Cambodia-Thailand Railway Line. This railway stretch will reduce the travel time between Thailand and Cambodia and boost trade and tourism.

Cambodian transport minister Sun Chanthol said the railway ran on Wednesday morning from the province of Pursat to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, which was the last remaining section to be completed between the two nations. This is a memorable occasion for our nation,” Chanthol said.

Cambodia has more than 600 kilometers of railway track stretching from its northern border with Thailand down to the southern coast. Cambodia and Thailand still have to sign an accord on trains crossing the border, but Chanthol said the two nations are expected to strike a deal soon. Much of Cambodia’s railways were built by the French during their colonial period which was ravaged by years of acrimonious struggle during the Cold War.
