The China-Taiwan dispute can now turn into a war anytime as the South China Sea dispute is intensifying. Since 2016 after the swearing-in of Tsai Ing-Wen as the President of Taiwan, Taiwan has deployed one fleet of missiles, perfected another set and has sped up the production of the third set. Taiwan is constantly improvising on its missile systems and now seeing China’s aggression Taiwan might feel a sense of urgency to do so.
China, on the other hand, is building up military and diplomatic pressure over Taiwan. China is also taking a hardline stance on anyone who advocates the idea of Taiwan’s independence and right to be left alone. China has also deployed strategic bombers, warships and fighter planes into training missions to demonstrate its military might.
The J-16 advanced fighter jets of China are now combat ready and they participated in a training mission only recently. Experts believe that the J-16 fighters have been specifically developed to take on Taiwan in case of an armed conflict between Beijing and Taiwan.
Alexander Huang, Strategic Studies professor at the Tamkang University in Taiwan stated that while China has an overwhelming military might, the new missile systems of Taiwan reduce the advantage China has over Taiwan in terms of warfare capabilities.
Even the latest report from Pentagon stated that China is training to hit US targets in the Pacific. Chinese bombers are undertaking training operations in a major demonstration of capabilities of the Chinese Air Force. China would surely be irked by augmentations in the missile systems of Taiwan. If Beijing ever decides to invade Taiwan then it would have a tough time overpowering Taiwan which is constantly working to balance out the military advantage that China enjoys.
