Earlier, the World Health Organisation (WHO) had stated that India had a tremendous capacity to deal with the pandemic as it has experience of eradicating smallpox and polio.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus appreciated Modi-Governments decision to implement the lockdown at a very early stage. “India has the capacity and it’s very important and good to see that India is taking early measures. This will help suppress and control it before it gets serious,” he said.

WHO executive director Mike Ryan also stated that -“Without implementing the necessary measures, without putting in place those protections, it’s going to be very difficult for the country to exit [from the lockdown]. And when they do, they have a resurgence and I think that’s the challenge now,” he said.
As India imposed a complete shutdown, WHO had earlier said India has a tremendous capacity to deal with the pandemic.

“There is a need in the number of labs where a wave in cases is seen. India is a very populated nation and the future of this virus will be considered in a very highly and densely populated country. India led the world in exterminating two pandemics, small-pox and polio so India has a tremendous capacity,” WHO executive director J Ryan had stated.
“There are no easy answers. It is exceptionally important that countries like India show the way to the world as they have done before,” he added. Dr Roderico Ofrin, WHO’s Regional Emergencies Director praised India’s comprehensive and robust response to prevent and contain the spread of Covid-19.

“Its latest announcements related to quarantine and social distancing measures, including recent lockdown of 75 affected districts, suspension of rail, inter-state bus services and metro services are initiatives of unprecedented scale and reflect the country’s resolve to prevent the spread of the pandemic,” he said.
