The former Croatian general Slobodan Praljak died after drinking poison during the trial at the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). This information was confirmed on Wednesday by the official representative of the agency Aenad Golczewski.

Death of Slobodan Praljak

“Slobodan Praljak one of the six defendants, died today in a hospital in The Hague,” Golczewski said, “the Appeals Chamber confirmed the verdict handed down earlier by the court chamber to sentence Praljak for 20 years in prison.” Immediately after this, Slobodan Praljak drank the liquid poison and felt sick. “

The medical staff of the ICTY immediately began to help Praljak. “At the same time, an ambulance was called, and Slobodan Praljak was transported to a nearby hospital,” Golczewski said. “However, he died.”

“In accordance with the existing rules, the Dutch authorities began an independent criminal investigation into the incident,” the official added. “It is currently continuing.” The ICTY brings its condolences to relatives and friends. “

Slobodan Praljak was accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity and serious violations of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 during the armed conflict in 1992-1995. Together with him, five Bosnian Croats passed in this case, all of them in 2013 were sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 10 to 25 years.
The appeal was filed both by the convicts themselves and by the prosecutor’s office, which considered the sentences passed too mild. Judging by the results of consideration of the appeal, the judges came to the conclusion that the court chamber made some mistakes, but decided not to change the terms of the punishment neither in the smaller nor in the larger side.
