De-Radicalization Camps In Kashmir – Is India Following China’s Xinjiang Strategy?

Pakistan has strongly denounced General Bipin Rawat statements over de-radicalization camps in Jammu and Kashmir for young children and politicising of FATF.

India’s chief of defence staff was speaking at a panel discussion at the Raisina Dialogue 2020. In the first such disclosure, General Rawat said de-radicalisation camps are operating in the country as it was necessary to isolate people who are completely radicalised.

“These remarks are reflective of the extremist mindset and bankrupt thinking that have evidently also permeated the state institutions of India,” FO spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said. She said Islamabad has consistently sensitised the world community about India’s malicious campaign with connection to FATF. “We expect that the FATF members would reject these Indian machinations,” she added.

“As a perpetrator of unabated state-terrorism in Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IOJ&K), India is in no position to pontificate on the issue of terrorism. The IOJ&K has already been turned into the world’s largest prison camp with 8 million Kashmiris incarcerated there since 5 August 2019.

“With over 900,000 Indian occupation forces perpetrating egregious violations of human rights; draconian laws such as Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Public Safety Act (PSA) enabling them complete impunity; and over 13,000 young Kashmiri boys abducted from their homes and away from their families, Gen Rawat’s talk of ‘de-radicalisation camps’ for Kashmiri children is simply despicable. It cannot be condemned enough.”

The FO spokesperson further said that Pakistan expected that the world community would take cognizance of the BJP government’s “desperate attempts” to divert attention from the unacceptable situation in J&K, growing domestic protest against discriminatory laws and practices, and its unabashed animus towards India’s minorities.

Several other Indian political leaders, including AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, had hit out at Rawat, saying the CoD is meddling with civilian issues. “It (de-radicalisation) is the responsibility of the Army This (these camps) are there for a long time. It is part of their (army) service.

They will go to places which have been identified as radicalized and organise medical camps, offer them educational guidance and counsel parents. Our military personnel always do this,” Reddy said.

No Comparison To Chinese De-Radicalization Camps

China has escalated its campaign of mass detention, impertinent scrutiny, political brainwashing and forced cultural conformity against the region’s Uighurs, Kazakhs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic groups.

According to Amnesty International, the Chinese authorities label the re-education camps as centres for “transformation-through-education” but most people refer to them simply as “re-education camps”.

Those sent to the re-education camps are not put on trial, have no access to lawyers or right to challenge the decision. Detainees could be left to rot in the prisons for months, as it is the authorities who decide if and when a detainee has been “transformed”.

Those who oppose or fail to show enough progress face harsh penalties ranging from verbal abuse to food deprivation, solitary confinement, torture and use of restraints and stress positions. There have been reports of deaths inside the facilities, including suicides of those incapable to bear the violation.

“So-called ‘re-education camps’ are places of indoctrination, torture and suffering that date back to the darkest hours of the Mao-era, when anyone suspected of not being loyal enough to the Communist Party could end up in China’s infamous labour camps.
