Donald Trump Requests PM Modi To Release Essential Drugs For Treating Covid-19 ASAP

US President Donald Trump has requested Indian PM Narendra Modi to release a vital drug to treat coronavirus – Hydroxychloroquine – ordered by the United States after India last month banned the drug for exports.

Possible Treatment For Coronavirus Found With Chloroquine; India Bans Its Exports

Trump said that he spoke to PM Modi on Saturday morning requested to release Hydroxychloroquine for the US. “I called Prime Minister Modi of India this morning. They make large amounts of Hydroxychloroquine. India is giving a serious consideration,” Trump said at his daily news conference at the White House on Saturday.

India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade on March 25 forbade the export of Hydroxychloroquine but said that certain shipments on humanitarian grounds may be allowed on a case-by-case basis.

With over lakh confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and over 8,000 fatalities, the US has emerged as the hotbed of the Covid-19.

Based on some initial results, the Trump administration is banking heavily on using Hydroxychloroquine, a decades-old malaria drug, for the successful treatment of coronavirus.

India has communicated to the US that it is a “responsible country” and will do all to supply hydroxychloroquine, a prophylactic for health care workers fighting against coronavirus, but only after making its own 1.3 billion population secure against the pandemic.

According to government sources cited by Hindustan Times, India is storing a large cache of the drug for its population in the event of a worst-case scenario. India is one of the largest manufacturers of hydroxychloroquine, which has been used for the treatment of malaria and lupus.
