In order to bolster the Indian Army’s combat strengths, the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) has developed indigenous thermal imaging and day sight equipment for the Indian army tanks. This equipment developed by the DRDO will enable the tanks to have a sharper night vision than ever before giving a substantial edge over regional adversaries.
DRDO Equipment To Be Installed In T-90 & T-72 tanks
This thermal imaging and day sight equipment developed by the DRDO will be used in T-72 and T-90 tanks of the Indian Army. This will give the tanks a crystal clear night vision even in pitch dark hence giving it leverage over the enemy.
This equipment can be used for both, day and night time operations to render precision like never before as stated by the DRDO officials. This technology also has a salient feature of providing superior image processing at any given time of the day.
300-Night Vision Equipment Delivered To The Indian Army
Out of the order placed by the army for 1000 night vision equipment sets, the DRDO has already delivered 300 units for the T-72 while the equipment for T-90 tanks is still to be delivered.
The equipment developed by DRDO will have a 3 km range to set eyes on the target. The new technology will replace the image intensive tubes used to enhance night vision for tanks.
There are more than 5000 tanks in the inventory of the Indian Army and this technology is expected to be eventually installed in most of the tanks. The project to develop this technology started back in 2011-2012 and is a collaborative success of DRDO and the Indian Army.
