Shopian Encounter: Nine militants have been killed so far (five on Sunday and four on Monday) in an encounter in Shopian during a gunbattle with joint forces of 178 battalions of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Five terrorists have been eliminated in operation Reban in Shopian,” defence spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said. Another four were killed on Monday morning – a police official stated.

On Monday morning, four terrorists were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Pinjora area of Shopian district of Jammu-Kashmir on Monday morning, police said. Three soldiers have also been injured in the encounter, according to reports.

Security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, news agency PTI reported quoting a police official. The search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired upon a search party of the forces, who retaliated.

Earlier on Sunday, an encounter ensued between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in South Kashmir district of Shopian.

According to reports – Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO at Reban in Shopian following a tip-off about the presence of militants in the wee hours.

All exit points were sealed and house to house searches launched, they said adding when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.

The Indian security forces had urged the militants to lay down their arms and surrender. The militants, however, fired at the security forces and were killed in the retaliatory gunfight. A Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Farooq Asad Nalli, and a foreign national is among the militants killed.

Troops also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, they added and said the encounter was going on when the reports last came in. Additional security forces were deployed in the nearby areas to prevent any demonstration, they said adding residents living in nearby houses were shifted to safer places.
