European Union Keen To Enhance Ties with India for Political and Economical Development

The Commission is likely to engage India to promote human rights and democracy, data protection, gender equality and women’s empowerment through the inclusion of young people. They would also enhance humanitarian coordination and develop joint actions on food security and disaster relief.

Realizing India’s role in the multipolar world, the European Union (EU) is looking at further reinforcing its political, economic and people-to-people ties with India. To strengthen cooperation and partnership with India, the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy today adopted a Joint Commission that sets out the EU’s vision for an India-strategy.

In a press statement, Federica Mogherini said India is a key player in our interconnected world. “We want to further reinforce our political, economic and people-to-people ties with India in order to address together global challenges, to promote together economic growth and to expand together business opportunities. The EU and India are committed to seize opportunities to support and promote effective multilateralism and solutions whenever peace and stability are in danger.”

A Well-Rounded Security

To maintain the rules-based global order, the statement says “it is vital that the EU and India implement effective multilateralism and global economic governance. The EU will seek to consolidate dialogue on multilateral issues and to coordinate positions with India.”

Moreover, EU and India promote international peace and stability. The Commission is likely to engage India to promote human rights and democracy, data protection, gender equality and women’s empowerment through the inclusion of young people. They would also enhance humanitarian coordination and develop joint actions on food security and disaster relief.

The statement says EU will seek regular exchanges and coordination with India on major foreign policy issues. Inter alia terrorism, cybersecurity, hybrid threats and maritime security, including the development of military-to-military relations, will be addressed through enhancement of cooperation on security and defence policies.

Sustainable Modernization

India will get support in its ongoing transition to a resource efficient economy through EU’s expertise and technology in sustainable infrastructure development, transport regulatory frameworks, circular economy, environmental protection and in digitalization. This will help India increase and enhance its global connectivity. Moreover, it will benefit new businesses and create investment opportunities.

The statement says that EU and India will continue to work towards comprehensive and balanced agreements on trade and investment. EU is also looking to engage India on issues of legal and irregular migration.

Furthermore, the EU and its member states will work together to provide a better understanding of the EU in India.
