Facing Death Threats, Asia Biwi’s Lawyer – Saiful Malook Flees To Netherlands

Saiful Malook – the lawyer representing Asia Bibi – Pakistani Christian woman whose death penalty for blasphemy was overturned by the High Court of Pakistan, fled to the Netherlands. This was reported by Reuters, citing the Christian Rights Group in the Netherlands.

It clarifies that the Saiful Malook, who sought in the course of the trial the liberation of women, left the country on Saturday.

In late October, the Supreme Court of Pakistan abolished the death penalty for Asia Bibi and released her from imprisonment on charges of insulting the prophet Mohammed. Asia Bibi, a 50-year-old Christian, the mother of five children, was sentenced to death in 2010 and almost became the first woman to be executed for this most serious crime under the local law – the Blasphemy charges.

Pakistani authorities still do not dare to release Bibi from prison because of the mass protests of Islamists that swept the country.

Earlier, the Supreme Court on Wednesday reversed the conviction of Asia Bibi, a mother of five, and ordered her to be released of dangerous blasphemy charges. Asia Bibi had been living on death row since 2010 after being convicted. The incident angered the Christians worldwide and has been a source of division within Pakistan, where two politicians who sought to help Bibi were assassinated.

The Supreme Court decision infuriated radical Islamists, in particular, members of a group called the Tehreek-e-Labaik (TLP), who have taken to the streets to call for the death of the judges who made the decision.

Authorities, including members of the main military security agency, held negotiations with the leader of the group late on Thursday but they came to no agreement, the TLP leader, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, said
