China Plans to Create a Military Base in Pakistan at Gwadar Port: US Media

Published

on

Is China really contemplating to establish a Military Base in Pakistan’s Gwadar Port? US Media think-tank has said that Beijing’s interest in the Gwadar Port is both commercial and for defence purpose. The Chinese are building the Gwadar port in Balochistan under the multi-billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Media reports from January had also suggested that Beijing may be given permission by Pakistan to build a military base in Jiwani, near the Gwadar port.

Going by the recent developments in the project, Pak lawmakers have reportedly started realising that the Chinese interest and investment in the Gwadar port project and the CPEC is more about their own strategic and economic plan. The US think tank community, Heritage Foundation, said that the Chinese have over the last few decades expressed interests in building ports along the Indian Ocean for its own military facilities and installations. While the possibility was downplayed earlier, it can now be seen that Beijing has started making its moves for the same.

The think tank, on the other hand, praised the Trump administration over strengthening ties with the Indian subcontinent. Jeff Smith, from the Heritage Foundation, said that in the eyes of the United States, India is seen as a ‘net provider of security’ in the Indian Ocean. He added that a strong relationship with India will only further improve and secure the interests of United States in the Indian Ocean.

Gwadar Port Regulations May Be Too Strict For Pakistan

Speaking on the regulations between Pakistan and China for the funding for the CPEC, another scholar said there have been reports of rising friction between the two nations. If reports are to be believed, owing to China’s strict laws and regulations, Pakistan had last year refused to take assistance from the former for the Bhasha dam. The scholar added that the Pakistan lawmakers have realised that China’s investment in Pak is not about the latter’s economic development but of China’s own economic and geopolitical ambitions.
