According to the WHO, only a minority of people with headache disorders are pertinently diagnosed and hence treated. What Are The Types Of Headache Disorders?
Headache disorders which are really painful can be of several types. These types include migraines, tension-type headaches and cluster headaches as classified by the World Health Organisation.
Is Headache Disorder Common?
About 50% of the adult population worldwide is affected by headache disorders. Between 50% to 75% of the world’s adult population has had a headache at least once in the past one year as per the WHO.
About 30% of the global population aged between 18 and 65 years is affected by migraine pains. Headache disorders are identical problems which affect people of all regions, ages, races and income levels. Around 4% of the world population is affected by headaches for 15 days or more in a month.
A Migraine
A migraine is a primary type of headache disorder and mostly affects those who fall in the age window of 35 years to 45 years. It is most commonly found in women and in fact, women having a migraine disorder are twice the men with the same disorder. It is more commonly found in women due to their hormonal structure. A migraine disorder is recurrent and often lifelong.
A tension-type Headache
With the increasing hassle of day to day routines, this has become the most common type of headache disorder. As much as 70% of the world population complains about having a tension-type headache for about 15 days a month. It persists for hours and in some cases even a few days. The ratio between women and men affected by a tension-type headache is 3:1.
Lack of knowledge among the health care providers and the lack of awareness among people keep headache disorders often ignored. A lot of people despite suffering excruciating pain leave a headache to its own fate and deny a facilitated medical care to themselves. You must make sure that you don’t make the mistake of ignoring your headache disorder.
Headache Treatment
Having recognised a disorder is just not enough for it ultimately had to last at a suitable treatment. The treatment for headache disorders includes proper diagnoses, cost-effective medications, stress-free routines, Yoga and awareness among patients.
The main spectrum of drugs for headache disorders includes analgesics, specific medications for a migraine, anti-emetics and prophylactic medicines. But you should take these medicines only after consulting your doctor.
