Dynamic Pakistani PM – Imran Khan is working on a safe-city project to ensure safety and contribute towards the country’s economic development. Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan will also become part of the Smart City Project initiated by the UN-Habitat.

Akbar Nisar Khan, Chief Operating Officer of Punjab Safe Cities Authority said: “Safe City Project ensures the safety and protection of people and contributes to the economic development in the country”.
In the first week of March, a team of UN-Habitat will visit Pakistan to examine the security situation for the addition of Lahore in the Safe City Project. Information Technology (IT) experts is an essential part of this project. Presently, approximately 1000 employees are operating on the Safe City Project in Lahore of which 850 are IT, experts.
“The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has changed the cost of the project from Rs13.42 billion to Rs17.5 billion for extending the project to Kasur after the Zainab incident”, Khan said.

Punjab Safe City authority has recommended starting the plan in six regional hubs of the province i.e Multan, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala. Khan informed that Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar also wants the scheme to be launched in Dera Ghazi Khan. “This will create a minimum of 5000 jobs and will help to implement National Action Plan,” Khan added.
During the last three months, the Safe City Project has also become a major source of revenue for the Punjab government as it earned Rs75 million through E-challan. The Safe City Project in Lahore has been acclaimed locally and internationally. The Safe City authority is working on criminal data analysis project in collaboration with Howard University and University College London. The professional companies like Delloitte and Touche visited Pakistan to examine the model of Lahore.
The project will be equipped with features like face recognition. Overall 8000 cameras have been installed in Lahore of which 930 have of face identification. “The evidence of Safe City Project is admissible in courts and as many as 2000 proofs had been given to the judiciary for trial”, Khan said.
