Does Imran Khan Lack Power in Pakistan; Islamabad Police Thinks So

There were allegations that Imran Khan will be the “pawn” of the Pakistan Army? The most controversial elections in Pakistan saw former cricketer Imran Khan emerge as the biggest political force in Pakistan, allegedly with the backing of Pakistan Army. EurAsian Looks at a report on “How Powerful is Imran Khan” in actuality?

Reports in Pakistan media suggest that a day after the Supreme Court cancelled Imran Khan’s government’s order for the transfer of police chief Jan Muhammad in Islamabad, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry asked what was the purpose of holding elections in Pakistan if the elected prime minister – Imran Khan could not even suspend an IGP.

Earlier, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar came down hard on the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan and sought a written statement in connection with the IGP’s transfer.

The information minister said, “Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi had time and again complained to the prime minister that the IG of Islamabad was not cooperating with him in taking action against the sale of ice (crystal methamphetamine) in the capital’s schools and colleges and does not attend his phone calls.” Chaudhry said an IGP was answerable to the prime minister and the chief minister, adding that it was the obligation of the bureaucrats to obey the government orders.

Advocating PM Imran Khan’s decision, Chaudhry said during PTI’s rule in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, not a single police officer was transferred following complaints. He said the matter was not an issue of the government or the opposition, adding that all legislators represent the people and should be given due respect otherwise the concept of parliamentary overview would lose its meaning.

Pakistan’s neighbour India which has often blamed Pakistan for destabilizing Kashmir and carrying out terror attacks in India will now have to adjust to the difference between Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan. While Nawaz Sharif as General Parvez Musharraf says was about appeasing India and going soft on India, Imran Khan who is being termed as the Pakistan Army’s face of victory is expected to be rather hawkish towards India.

In this case, Imran Khan as the prime minister of Pakistan, the most powerful position in the country has been unable to move a police officer, which signifies only two things – either the judiciary in Pakistan is very robust or Imran Khan’s powers are curtailed.
