India-Russia To Sign S-400 Deal In October: Russian Officials

Russia is optimistic about signing the S-400 air defence deal with India in October. According to Russian officials, all the technical and economic aspects for the delivery of S-400 missile defence systems have been mutually agreed upon. The Director of the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Dmitry Shugaev said that Russia is hoping to sign both the constructs in October.

As reported by Sputnik News, the Russian official stated that Russia has completed all drafts to be signed upon with regards to the S-400 deal with India. Russia is looking forward to sealing the deal with India in October during the Russian-Indian Summit scheduled then.

The official also informed that Russia has given Indian a waiver in the final prices given the strategic diplomatic and defence cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi. The initial cost of the deal as per open sources was estimated to be $ 6.5 billion. If the contract on the deliveries of the S-400 to India is signed this year then Indian will receive the first batch in 2020.

The defence pact between India and Russia on the delivery of S-400 air defence systems was agreed upon by Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi in 2016.

The S-400 Triumf Air defence missile system is the next generation mobile air defence system with advanced capabilities. It is capable of decimating aerial targets up to a larger range which can go as high as 400 kilometres during operations.

The Russian official also stated that there are also possibilities that India and Russia may resume talks on the fifth-generation fighter jet project too. The project has been frozen as of now. The S-400 missile defence systems are expected to give India’s security and air defence a great boost given the high capabilities these air defence systems have. India has maintained its grounds that it would proceed with the S-400 deal with Russia despite objections from the US.
