India Play Russian “Trump Card” to Defy Threats from Donald Trump over S-400

India has made it very clear that India-Russia defence deal of S-400 missile systems will not be affected by Donald Trump’s threats of unilateral sanctions. India will go ahead with the S-400 air defence deal system with Russia despite the US threatening India with unilateral sanctions. Taking a hard stance, the Indian Minister for Defence said that India is not bound by the US laws to make its defence deals.

India has made it clear that it will endure its strategic relationship with Russia and the INR 39000 crores S-400 deal has reached its final stage. India will not belittle Russia for negotiations over the S-400 air defence missile systems between India and Russia have been on for years.

At a media interaction on Friday, Nirmala Sitharaman, Indian Minister for Defence said that India is not bound by CAATSA for it a US law and not a mandate of the United Nations. CAATSA is a sanctions law under the US administration. She further conveyed to the media that the US has been already told that there are no technical issues the US needs to be concerned about pertaining to the purchase of S-400 missile systems.

The S-400 missile systems will add a great new dimension to Indian defence. These systems are highly mobile and automated. It consists of different hypersonic and supersonic missiles along with long-range radars. These missile systems can be used by India to protect cities or important facilities during situations of war.

The induction of the S-400 missile systems into the Indian Air Force will strengthen India’s defence mechanisms significantly. The S-400 missile systems can track and eliminate drones, spy planes, stealth fighters up to a range of 400 km and vertical distance of 30 km.

The United States warned India against the India-Russia defence deal over S-400 missile defence systems. The US had reportedly also offered India to buy its Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile defence systems as an alternative to the S-400 missile systems.
