Sri Lanka is developing the Kankesanthurai harbour which will be sponsored by the Indian government. Sri Lanka is willing to develop an economic hub around the Kankesanthurai harbour located in the Northern Province, stated Sri Lankan PM.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe visited the port in the Jaffna peninsula to discuss the implementation of the 45.27 million US dollars development project sponsored by the Indian government last year.
Wickremesinghe directed officials to work with speed and efficiency to finalize land acquisition and other preliminary work of the three-year development plan.
The Indian government has provided financial assistance for transforming the harbour into a commercial port and furnish it to handle general cargo. The transformation of the port will boost import and export sectors as well as generate direct and indirect employment opportunities in Tamil-majority province.
Under the proposed plan, the harbour’s basin will be deepened to 8 metres allowing it to handle general cargo ships. Ports minister said that one existing pier will be completely restored and a new pier will also be constructed. During the tsunami in 2004 and the cyclone ‘NISHA’ in 2008, the harbour and its berthing piers were damaged to a greater extent.
