India, Vietnam Hold Naval Drills To Boost Defence Relations

India-Vietnam relations are improving day by day. A Vietnam Coast Guard ship on its maiden visit to India (in Chennai) undertook joint exercises with the Indian Coast Guard off the city coast aimed at boosting relations between navies of two nations.

“Coast Guard ships Shaurya, Arnvesh and interceptor boat C-431 along with a Dornier aircraft and Chetak helicopter participated in the joint exercise -‘Sahyog HOP TAC-2018”, an official press release said.

The exercise was aimed at familiarising the coast guards of the two nations with each others’ capabilities and increasing the working level relationship to rescue lives at sea. The feature of the joint exercise was a scenario of the hijacking of an oil ship and rescue of its crew in a coordinated joint operation.

The naval drills were conducted under the supervision of Inspector General Paramesh Sivamani Commander Coast Guard Eastern region and was witnessed by Vietnam Coast Guard Commandant Major General Nguyen Van Son, the release added.

India-Vietnam Relations

In 2016, India-Vietnam Relations were given top priority and ties were enhanced to develop a strategic partnership. India and Vietnam now look to consolidate on this strategic partnership to have a larger cooperation in defence ties.

There’s been a significant advancement in the defence ties between India and Vietnam in the last 2 years. This cooperation isn’t just traditional but also includes cooperation in the training of personnel, cooperation in funding and equipment for capacity building, collaborations of the coast guards and other significant pacts.

Now the two nations look to establish a greater cooperation in training, technology and research. During the visit of Nirmala Sitharaman, the defence minister of India to Vietnam, the President of Vietnam, Tran Dai Quang said that Vietnam supports the Act East policy of India.
