Indian Army Pays Nearly 300 Crores Compensation For Using Land For Bunkers and Barracks

The Indian Army recently paid about Rs 38 crore as compensation for the land acquired by the forces to set up its bases, bunkers and barracks to the villagers of Arunachal Pradesh. The total amount compensated to the villagers is now close to a whopping INR 300 crores.

The Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu distributed the cheques to the villagers of West Kameng district on Friday.  “A total of Rs 37.73 crore has been compensated to the villagers.

Among those who received the cheques include Prem Dorjee Khrimey, who received Rs 6.31 crore, while Phuntso Khawa got Rs 6.21 crore and Khandu Glow received Rs 5.98 crore.

After the 1962 India-China War, the Indian Army acquired massive chunks of land to set up its bases, bunkers, barracks, other defence installations. However, no compensation was provided to the landowners. Rijiju, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, persuaded the Defence Ministry to compensate the villagers.

In April 2017, Rs 54 crore was distributed among 152 families of three villages of West Kameng district. Earlier in September, an instalment of Rs 158 crore was distributed among the villagers for the private land taken over by the Indian Army.  In February 2018, Rs 40.80 crore was handed over to 31 families in the Tawang district.
