Indian Navy Submarine Under Upgrade in Russia to be Floated Soon

Indian Navy Submarine – Sindhukesari is being repaired and upgraded in Russia and will be rolled out soon from Zvyozdochka Shipyard. The refurbished Indian Navy Submarine will be floated out very shortly, according to key sources confirming the news to Russian news agency TASS.

“The Indian Navy Submarine Sindhukesari has been rolled out of the workshop and the slipway stage of the repairs has been performed. In few days, the submarine will be rolled out for outfitting work,” the source claimed.

After all the repair and upgradation work is performed, “the shelf life of the Sindhukesari will be prolonged by 10 years, the source told to the Russian news agency. The Indian Navy Submarine – Sindhukesari is undergoing repairs and upgrade for the second time, while another Indian Navy Submarine of similar class, the INS Sindhuraj, is simultaneously being refurbishment at the Zvyozdochka Shipyard.

Indian Navy Submarines in Russia

The contract for Indian Navy Submarines Sindhukesari’s repairs and upgradation work was signed in 2015 which was to be completed in twenty-seven months. INS Sindhukesari became the sixth Russian-built submarine undergoing refurbishments at the Zvyozdochka Shipyard. Earlier, the Severodvinsk-based centre with expertise in servicing and decommissioning of nuclear submarines refurbished five diesel-electric Indian Navy Submarines since 1997 which includes INS Sindhuvir, INS Sindhuratna, INS Sindhugosh, INS Sindhuvijay and INS Sindhurakshak.

The Sindhuraj was laid down at the Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard in 1985 on request from the Indian Government. In 1987, the submarine entered service with the Indian Navy. The Admiralty Shipyard was also responsible for medium repairs of this INS Sindhuraj. In 2017, INS Sindhuraj was delivered to the Zvyozdochka Shipyard for the second medium repairs.
