India Watching Keenly As Israel, US Head For Elections

In what is called an unprecedented time in Israel, the country is going to polls for the third consecutive time in a span of 12 months. The first election in April 2019 saw the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party bagging the most votes and yet wasn’t able to form a coalition in the parliament.

In the September election, the centrist party, Blue and White won the most votes. Again, the winning party couldn’t make a coalition. Now, in March, Israel is going to vote again hoping to get a stable government.

A lot has unraveled in the Middle East and especially in Israel. In November, Netanyahu was indicted for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust thereby becoming the first Prime Minister in Israel’s history to be indicted while serving term in the office.

The Israel elections hold a significant prominence in the Middle East. With a lot of international interest in the election and the United States elections to follow, a sense of madness has prevailed in the international politics concerning Israel.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, with the chemistry he shares with Netanyahu, has emerged as the biggest ally of Israel. With the announcement of his so-called Middle East peace plan, the Israelis are, for the first time, relieved to see their part of the narrative being pushed.

It is also a well-known fact that Netanyahu has been the key to building strong ties with Asian countries, especially, India. Under Netanyahu, India became the largest arms customer of Israel in 2017 with sales worth more than $715 million.

The bilateral ties between the two countries under Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu strengthened further with development in technical co-operation in the field of agriculture, irrigation and water supply products. On the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral ties between Indian and Israel, Narendra Modi became the first serving Prime Minister to visit the country.

Under Narendra Modi, with a newfound friendship with Donald Trump, India also strengthened its relationship with the United States. The two leaders hosting an event for each other has only shown the admiration they have for each other. A much talked about trade deal is set for announcement followed by the maiden visit by Trump.

Along with the Israel elections, the much-awaited United States election is also around the corner. With the controversy around Trump’s impeachment and the Democrat Bernie Sanders gaining more popularity, both India and Israel would fancy Trump coming back to the office. This, however, in Israel’s case, is viable only if Benjamin Netanyahu forms a coalition in the upcoming election.
