Iranian Nuclear Deal belongs to the whole World, not just US: Mogherini

The agreement on the Iranian nuclear program is working fine, and Tehran is fulfilling its obligations. This was stated on Monday by the  European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

“I have said many times that the agreement is working fine, the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] confirmed several times that Iran is fulfilling its obligations,” said Mogherini.

Commenting on the possible withdrawal of the US from the deal, Mogherini stressed that these agreements were not signed with one country.” “This deal belongs to the international community,” she said. As the High Representative stated, she sees her task and the task of the European Union to “make sure of the full implementation of the transaction by all its participants.”

Mogherini noted that on September 20, the ministerial meeting of the Russia, Great Britain, China, USA, France and Germany and Iran on the implementation of the nuclear deal will take place. According to her, this is a “good sign”, as usually such regular meetings are held at the level of deputy foreign ministers.

Iran and the six world powers reached an agreement on the settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue in 2015 and adopted a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (CFA). This plan provides for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iran in connection with its nuclear program by the UN Security Council, the United States and the European Union. In return, Tehran pledged to limit its nuclear activities, placing it under international control. The deal entered the implementation phase in January 2016.

During the election campaign, and then as US president, Trump repeatedly criticized this document, arguing that it gives unilateral advantages to the Islamic Republic. The US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley asked a question on the importance of the nuclear deal with Iran, saying it allows Tehran to “hold the whole world hostage.”
