Israeli EW Radars To ‘Defend’ Ukraine From Russian Strikes; Military Trains In Poland To Master The Systems

The armed forces of Ukraine are reportedly teaming up with the Israeli military on Polish soil to acquire proficiency in operating the Israeli early-warning radar system.

According to the National News Agency of Ukraine (Ukrinform), the Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, officially announced this during a press conference held in Vienna.

Cohen revealed that the Israeli and Ukrainian military are working together in Poland to deploy a warning system to help protect civilians’ lives in Ukraine.

The system aims to detect missiles and drones while also tracking their trajectory. Implementing the Israeli system is anticipated to enable quicker activation of air warning sirens in specific areas with a genuine risk of missile attacks or enemy drone incidents.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniichuk, disclosed that Kyiv has commenced testing an early warning system developed in Israel.

Korniichuk said that the system is designed to issue alerts in response to potential Russian strikes, and it is currently being implemented as a pilot program that will initially cover a city such as Kyiv. If successful, the system will be expanded to other regions of Ukraine.

Korniichuk highlighted that this system being tested in Ukraine is the same one that has been successfully employed in Israel for a long time. He added that the Red Color alert system, known as Tzeva Adom, has been adapted to suit Ukraine’s needs.

This system can detect missiles and drones, track their movement, and predict the approximate time and place of impact.

When a threat is detected, sirens are activated, giving people a specific timeframe to take cover. The system’s advantage lies in its ability to focus the warning coverage on specific cities, providing a localized alert system.

Korniichuk emphasized that the Red Color alert system, known as Tzeva Adom, has been adapted to fit Ukraine’s needs. This system detects missiles and drones, tracks their movement, and calculates their estimated time of impact.

It also provides a signal to indicate how much time people have to find shelter. One key advantage of this system is its ability to determine the approximate time and location of missile impacts, allowing it to focus its alerts on specific cities.

Can Israel’s Missile Alert System Safeguard Ukraine?

In the last few weeks, Moscow has intensified its aggression toward the Ukrainian capital, with almost daily attacks that involve the launching of missiles and drones.

These attacks occur not only during the early hours but also in broad daylight, posing a significant threat to the safety and security of the Ukrainian population.

The primary goal of these strikes is to deplete the Ukrainian air defense systems. The cost of Russian Shahed drones is significantly lower when compared to the expenses incurred by Ukraine’s air defenses for launching missiles.

Michael Starr, an Israeli Defense Forces veteran, explained that Israel’s missile warning system could serve as a cost-effective and effective temporary solution to prevent the exhaustion of munitions until a resupply becomes available.

Due to the frequent attacks on Ukrainian cities, Ukraine is compelled to intercept Russian drones and missiles. The Israeli-made system can alert the Ukrainian military when it is necessary to intercept a missile or drone, thus conserving precious munitions.

He highlighted that Israel’s Iron Dome is employed similarly. In situations where Gazan rockets are projected to land in open areas, the costly Tamir interceptors are not deployed.

Starr concluded that the Ukrainian military could conserve their ammunition by knowing that Russian missiles would not reach their intended targets.

In a worst-case scenario, Ukrainian defenders can save ammunition if they believe civilians have ample time and warning to reach shelters before the projectiles hit.

However, the operating conditions and capabilities of the warning system in Ukraine will be distinct due to the advanced characteristics of the weapons utilized by Russia in their attacks against Ukraine.

As a result, more adjustments and modifications may be required to effectively tailor the system to respond to the specific threat landscape Russia poses.

These adaptations will ensure that the warning system can adequately detect and respond to the types of weapons and tactics employed by Russia, ultimately enhancing the protection and safety of the Ukrainian population.
