Leading Japanese conglomerate Hitachi is set to intensify its efforts to expand its presence in Asia’s railway market, directly competing with China, the region’s dominant key infrastructure provider.
Hitachi’s strategic focus centers on expanding its presence in Singapore, Malaysia, and India. The company’s ambitions were highlighted on June 19 by Giuseppe Marino, head of Hitachi’s railway systems business and CEO of Hitachi Rail.
The move follows its recent acquisition — completed on May 31 — of Thales Group’s rail signal business. It was a strategic maneuver aimed at enhancing its global footprint and competitiveness.
The new acquisition follows Hitachi’s earlier buyouts of AnsaldoBreda and STS from Italy’s Finmeccanica and consolidates their capabilities in rolling stock, signaling, ticketing systems, and digital services.
While Hitachi, a manufacturer of Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains, maintains a robust presence in Japan, the UK, and Italy, the acquisition of Thales’ signal business expands its reach into new markets, including France, Germany, Canada, and across Asia, including Singapore and Malaysia.
“We can offer a very integrated system that is connected,” Marino stated, emphasizing the appeal of a comprehensive ‘key-ready’ solution to customers who prefer streamlined procurement processes.
Hitachi’s expansion strategy in Southeast Asia puts it in direct competition with China’s state-owned giant, CRRC Corporation Limited, which is involved in high-speed rail projects across the region.
CRRC has spearheaded high-speed railway initiatives in Indonesia and Thailand and expressed interest in linking Kuala Lumpur to Singapore through high-speed rail. It is a project where Japanese companies have yet to submit proposals.
“We are scouting,” Marino commented in response to the Malaysian high-speed rail plans, indicating Hitachi’s proactive stance in exploring new opportunities amid China’s ambitious Belt and Road initiative, which aims to expand its influence through infrastructure projects like the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).
Beijing announced on June 19 its readiness to consider linking Malaysia’s $10-billion East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) with existing China-backed railway developments in Laos and Thailand.
The move could significantly broaden China’s Belt and Road initiative influence throughout Southeast Asia. Chinese Premier Li Qiang, visiting Malaysia for three days, said that this initiative would solidify the central route of the envisioned Pan-Asia Railway, spanning from Kunming in China to Singapore.
India, A Very Important Market
Marino emphasized India’s significance as a key market, noting its burgeoning population, now surpassing China’s as the world’s largest. “India is a very important market. Its population is becoming No. 1,” Marino said.
Hitachi’s endeavor to expand also comes as India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advances its plans for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, a milestone initiative expected to transform intercity travel.
The estimated Rs 1.25 lakh crore Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project is predominantly funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), covering 88% of the financing.
Marino expressed Hitachi’s ambition to introduce Japanese technology, specifically the Shinkansen, into India, with ongoing negotiations in progress. “Of course, we have an ambition to bring Japanese technology, Shinkansen, to India,” Marino said. “We have negotiations ongoing.”
In addition to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, India plans high-speed rail connections between New Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata.
Although Marino did not elaborate extensively on Hitachi’s activities in India, earlier reports indicate that the company has collaborated with another Japanese company, Kawasaki, to initiate talks regarding necessary modifications to the design of bullet trains.
These discussions aim to ensure that the trains are suitable for Indian environmental and operational conditions.
Under JICA’s stipulations, only Japanese firms like Kawasaki and Hitachi are eligible to bid for the project. Both companies have signaled readiness to supply modified Shinkansen train sets tailored for Indian conditions, including resilience against severe heat and dust prevalent in the region. The adapted train sets will feature ten coaches accommodating up to 690 passengers each.
The NHSRCL (National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd) plans to acquire 18 bullet trains utilizing Japan’s E5 Shinkansen technology for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor. The trains will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 320 km per hour.
