Kulbhushan Jadhav to Finally meet his Wife in Pakistan

Finally, humanitarian senses have prevailed in the Pakistan government to allow wrongly convicted (as accused by India) death-row prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav to meet his wife. India had been requesting Pakistan to grant a visa to Kulbhushan Jadhav’s mother on Humanitarian grounds for a long time.

“A note verbale to this effect has been sent to the Indian high commission in Islamabad, today,” Dr. Mohammad Faisal, Pakistan foreign office spokesperson, said. “The government of Pakistan has decided to facilitate the meeting of Kulbhushan Jadhav with his wife merely on the humanitarian basis,” Faisal added.

“A Note Verbale to the present result has been sent to the Indian High Commission in the national capital, these days (10 November),” he said. The Pakistani tribunal in April sentenced Kulbhushan Jadhav to death on charges of spying and act of terrorism. The International Court of Justice, in May, halted his execution on India’s appeal in the international platform.

It is not clear what prompted Islamabad to permit Jadhav’s wife to meet him in Pakistan, the Indian Express Tribune reported.

According to reputed sources, speculations were flying high about the recent successful meeting between  India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the newly-appointed Pakistani diplomat to the Indian capital Sohail Mahmood, the daily said.

India had many times requested a Pakistani visa for Jadhav’s mother, Avantika, who wished to meet her son in Pakistan prison. Pakistan has repeatedly denied consular access to Jadhav even on humanitarian grounds citing the reason that it does not apply to cases related to spies and terrorism.

Kulbhushan Jadhav, on 22 June, filed a mercy petition before Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Pakistan claims to have caught Jadhav from Balochistan province when he reportedly entered from the Islamic Republic of Iran. However, India has always maintained its firm stand that Kulbhushan Jadhav was kidnaped from Chahabar in Iran where Jadhav had business interests after retiring from the Indian Navy.
