The US Navy has awarded $43 million contracts to the American aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin to develop electronic warfare equipment and other components for its submarines.
The company has been awarded two separate contracts, according to the US Department of Defense. One of the contracts is valued at $11.7 million, under which Lockheed is required to conduct all the designing, prototyping, and qualification testing of the equipment.
The electronic warfare equipment allows for better detection and tracking of enemy submarine’s electronic signatures, making it a true hunter-killer boat.
According to the contract, the work is expected to be completed by February 2022 and will be performed at the company’s facilities in Syracuse, New York.
The EW systems can collect enemy radar signatures and conduct underwater surveillance, and reconnaissance operations, as well as coordinate with other submarines in the fleet. These are particularly essential in the modern war scenario where the US Navy could potentially face arch-rivals – the Russian and PLA navies in the Arctic waters and the contested waters of the South China Sea.
Lockheed Martin has received another contract valued at $31.5 million for “system production and associated components in support of all new-construction and in-service class submarines,” DOD says.
Lockheed Martin is an American aerospace, arms, defense, security, and advanced technologies company with worldwide interests. It is best known for its F-35 stealth fighters, the US’ most advanced combat aircraft. The company was formed by the merger of Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta in March 1995 and is headquartered in North Bethesda, Maryland, in Washington, D.C.
