US First Lady Melania Trump and Donald’s Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump raised questions when as they arrived at the Vatican to meet Pope Francis, wearing a headscarf which both of them opted to give a miss during their trip to Saudi Arabia. Melania, who accompanied President Donald Trump on his first foreign visit, wore a long-sleeved Dolce & Gabbana black dress and a veil, a tradition followed by various US First Ladies. Ivanka Trump also wore black dress and veils.
A spokesperson for the first lady said Melania’s decision to wear a black lace veil, also known as a mantilla followed Vatican protocol that women who have an audience with the pope must wear long sleeves, formal black clothing, and a veil to cover their head. In Saudi Arabia, however, the government did not request that she wear a head covering, the spokesman said.
