MJ Akbar – Prominent Indian Minister Trapped in Sexual Allegations

MJ Akbar must either offer a satisfactory explanation on the allegations of sexual harassment against him or resign immediately. This was stated by India opposition part, Congress.

The Congress party also demanded an inquiry into his conduct. As the #MeToo campaign gathered momentum in India, some women journalists have come out and accused MJ Akbar, a former editor and now the minister of state for external affairs, of sexually harassing them during his stint as a journalist.

Congress spokesperson S Jaipal Reddy, in a press conference, said, “I think Mr M J Akbar must either offer a satisfactory explanation or resign forthwith. How can he be in the ministry with serious allegations being levelled against him by responsible journalists who worked with him. Let there be an inquiry into it. We demand an inquiry into M J Akbar’s conduct.”

Allegations Against MJ Akbar

Earlier, Priya Ramani had tweeted about a story she had written for The Vogue magazine in 2017, without naming Akbar. “He was this brilliant, flamboyant editor who dabbled in politics, who called me-my 1st job-to his hotel room to ‘discuss work’, after I put the edition to bed-read midnight, and made life at work hell when I refused, couldn’t speak up due to various compulsions, but yes #MeTooIndia,” she said without naming him.

On Tuesday, however, she named him in a tweet and said, “It was MJ Akbar I do not say this lightly .. I know the consequences of false accusations and it has been now 17 yrs and I have no concrete proof. But I was young, just made features editor, super impressed with our brilliant editor, sensitive writer (read Riot after Riot).” “I began this piece with my MJ Akbar story. Never named him because he didn’t “do” anything,” she said while calling him a “predator”.
