Kashmir Protests Over Kathua Rape Case Reach London with PM Modi

Kashmir Protests and Indian PM Modi reach London. During his London Trip, PM Narendra Modi was greeted by a mob of protestors protesting against the recent surge in sexual violence and the Kathua rape case in Jammu and Kashmir. While PM Modi’s second visit to London was seen as historical after he was banned from entering the UK in 2002 post-Gujrat riots, which was eventually lifted in 2012.

Has Indian PM Narendra Modi Failed the Nation?

The Parliament Square in London was full of protestors holding signs that read ‘Modi Go Home’, ‘Modi Not Welcome’ and more, demonstrating against the surging sexual violence in India. This was particularly with respect to the recent Kathua rape case of an 8-year-old who was drugged, gang-raped, caged in a temple and murdered after 8 days. The other brutal case refers to a member of the Modi led BJP who has been accused of the rape of a teenage girl. The BJP lawmaker evaded any legal action unless the girl threatened with self-immolation.

Modi addresses the Outrage

At a recent event, the PM had addressed the issue and promised justice to the victims and actions against the accused. However, there have been several protests in India and against the Modi led government, recognising sexual violence as a politically charged agenda. The mob in London voiced the opinion that the government of India is taking no action against protecting the women and serving justice to the victims of sexual violence. Modi was accused of ‘inaction’ against such brutal and heinous crimes.

Brutal Gangrape and Killing Unmasks Hindu Extremism in Jammu and Kashmir

The Kathua rape case has garnered the world’s attention over the rise in sexual violence in India and the details of the crime make it evident that the gang rape was politically motivated. In a shocking report, it has been seen that over 40% of the rape cases in India are against children and that the number of reported cases has risen by almost 60% in 2016 as compared to 2012. However, activists and human rights groups believe these numbers are far lesser than actual figures.
