Net Neutrality In India Is Now A Pleasant Reality And Netizens Are Celebrating

Published

on

Net neutrality in India is now a reality and netizens have every reason to celebrate. The Indian government has approved net neutrality in India ensuring free and fair access to the internet. The Indian government on Wednesday approved the principles of net neutrality and decided to penalize any deviations and violations of the rules of net neutrality.

What does net neutrality in India mean?

In 2018 there are 369.01 million internet users in India. Under net neutrality, the Indian citizens will have an unrestricted and non-discriminatory access to the internet. As reported by The Times of India, telecom secretary Aruna Sundarajan said that any deviations and violations of the rules of net neutrality will have stiff consequences. The official also said that net neutrality in India will come into effect almost immediately.

Net neutrality will provide level playing field and equal opportunities to all the online players. The recommendations given by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India prohibits blocking, degrading, slowing down and preferential speeds to different content available online. Net neutrality will keep the social media providers and online content providers in check while they seek to gain a greater control on delivery of online content. Uncontrolled authorities given to these giants will lead to the paid prioritization of online content. Such a monopoly will discourage new innovations as well as the startup culture in India.

What will be the exceptions to net neutrality in India?

Net Neutrality in India may come with certain exceptions. These exceptions include new and emerging services like autonomous driving, telemedicine and remote diagnostic services. These services may require prioritised internet lanes and higher than ordinary speeds. A committee will be set up to decide upon the exceptions to net neutrality in India. These exceptions will be defined keeping in view the basic tenants of net neutrality.
