President of the United States Donald Trump said on December 6 that it was time to recognize this city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and instructed to begin preparations for the transfer of the American embassy. Guatemala became the first country to follow the steps of the United States.

On Thursday, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution with 128 votes to reject the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in response to Trump’s decision. The document was opposed by nine countries: Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, the United States and Togo, while 35 abstained. The status of Jerusalem is one of the key issues in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The Israelis occupied the eastern part of the city during the 1967 war and insist that Jerusalem is the “single and indivisible” capital of Israel, while the Palestinians want to make the eastern part of the city the capital of their state.
