The Indian National Security Guard – NSG commandos will be deployed outside Srinagar in the volatile state of Jammu and Kashmir to intensify the anti-terror operations. The decision to deploy the NSG commandos was taken several months ago, but it was only on Thursday that the NSG commandos got their foot on the ground.

This is the first time that such a deployment is being carried out in Jammu and Kashmir. Several hundred NSG commandos and officers have been deployed outside Srinagar according to the Indian media.
It is reliably learnt that the NSG commandos who hold expertise in anti-terror operations, will now become a part of the existing counter-terror force in Jammu and Kashmir. Secondly, the NSG commandos will also provide critical training to the existing security forces deployed in the Kashmir valley which includes the J&K Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The state of Jammu and Kashmir is currently under the Governor’s rule and the Home Ministry took a decision to deploy NSG commandos in the volatile region with an aim to enhance counter-terror operations. Even though the NSG commandos are trained in anti-terror operation and considered a specialized force, but how effective would they be against hardened terrorists in an unfamiliar and volatile region is yet to be seen.
