Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor has been replaced by Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar as the new head of the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

The announcement comes as Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed called on PM Imran Khan. During the meeting, professional matters related to the military were discussed, DawnNewsTV reported quoting sources.

The outgoing DG ISPR, Maj Gen Ghafoor, took to Twitter to thank “everyone I have remained associated with during the tenure”.

“My very special thanks to media all across. Can’t thank enough fellow Pakistanis for their love and support,” he wrote, conveying his best wishes to the new DG ISPR.

Ghafoor also posted a farewell message on his personal Twitter account, thanking the public for their support. “Stay strong, continue doing your bit for Pakistan. Stay blessed,” he wrote.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor was appointed as the DG ISPR in December 2016. He had replaced Lt Gen Asim Bajwa.

According to the ISPR website, Maj Gen Ghafoor was commissioned on Septemeber 9, 1988, in 87 Medium Regiment. He is a graduate of Command & Staff College Quetta, Command & Staff College Bandung (Indonesia) and NDU Islamabad.

Earlier, Indian National Cyber Security Coordinator acknowledged that Pakistan Army’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), and its spokesman – Asif Ghafoor have really got their act together” in information warfare against India.

Pant emphasised the need for a unified public relations command for the three wings of the armed forces to come at par with Pakistan in the “narrative warfare”.

“When are we going to have our own equivalent of the DGISPR because the (Indian armed forces) services have their own PRs and they are going in different ways. Somebody at the national level now has to look at the narrative warfare and how to implement it in various domains,” he said.
