SAARC Summit in Islamabad: Will PM Modi Accept or Reject Pakistan’s Invitation?

SRAARC SUMMIT IN PAKISTAN: In September this year, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj left the SAARC meeting before hearing Pakistan’s statement on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

SAARC Summit in Islamabad has already seen action after Pakistan has decided to India invite for the regional conference. Fearing Delhi may pull-away from the SAARC Summit, Pakistan will be inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoping New Delhi will agree this time around.

In September this year, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj left the SAARC meeting before hearing Pakistan’s statement on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This was following the killings of three policemen in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

Moreover, India had boycotted the SAARC meeting that was to be held in Pakistan in 2016, citing ‘cross-border terror attacks’. The meeting didn’t actuate as Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan also pulled out.

Meanwhile, India and Pakistan relationship is on the rocks again. The terror attack at a prayer hall in Amritsar, Punjab has been attributed to Pakistani militants and the situation in Kashmir is also tense. Pakistan gave an invitation to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Ms Swaraj for the ground-breaking ceremony for Kartarpur Corridor which was turned down by both.
