Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron said he agreed with the Russian President Vladimir Putin to monitor the situation of sexual minorities in Chechnya.
“We talked about LGBT people in Chechnya, as well as NGOs in Russia. I indicated to President Putin and agreed that we will regularly monitor the situation in Chechnya .” – said Macron at a press conference in Paris. “Mr. Putin has assured me that he will seriously look into the persecution of gays in Chechnya”, – added Macron.
“We also talked more about our bilateral relations, and also on the Russia-EU relations, said Vladimir Putin said. In early April, “Novaya Gazeta” published an investigation which stated that in Chechnya, there is a mass arrest men suspected of homosexuality. Moreover, the investigation claimed that at least three men were also killed. The newspaper also reported that in there are secret prisons in Chechnya, where illegally held and tortured gay men. Chechen authorities denied the existence of any secret prison and the presence of special prisons for gays.
Earlier on gay rights in Chechnya, Putin spoke with powerful German Chancellor Angela Merkel. After the talks held in Sochi, Merkel said that she requested the Russian president to look into the situation in Chechnya.
During the meeting, he Putin and Macron also discussed the situation in Syria, along with the conflict in Ukraine and cooperation between Russia and EU.
