Pompeo in Saudi To Probe Khashoggi’s Death; Riyadh May Admit Mistake

Turkish investigators have said they believed Khashoggi may have been murdered and his body cut to pieces after being attacked by a Saudi death squad.

Jamal Khashoggi’s death by “Saudi Death Squads” as Turkey believes, continues to draw flak on the Saudi authorities. Almost all major nations have criticised the death of Jamal Khashoggi and netizens have not stayed behind. One netizen sarcastically questions what if visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who is visiting Saudi Arabia also disappears? The question might be a quip, but allegations on Riyadh are very serious.

On Tuesday, October 16, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the King of Saudi Arabia Salman ibn Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to explore what really happened to the missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul, Turkey.

As stated in the State Department, Mike Pompeo made it clear that finding out the circumstances of the disappearance of Khashoggi is the main purpose of his visit and President Trump is disturbed and is keen to address this issue.

No statements about the disappearance of the journalist have not yet come out, but the US media believes that Saudi Arabia may admit that he was killed at the consulate, citing the fact that his death was the result of “misunderstanding during interrogation.”

At the beginning of the meeting with US Secretary of State, Crown Prince Mohammed said to Pompeo: “We are long-standing and reliable allies. We meet challenges together — past, present, and future. ”

Until now, the Saudi authorities have firmly rejected the accusations in the murder of Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi insisting that the journalist left the consulate on his own. At the same time, Turkey and Saudi Arabia agreed to establish a joint working group to investigate the disappearance of the journalist.

Earlier, as EurAsian Times reported, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Riyadh on a working visit today to discuss with the Riyadh about the situation regarding the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. After Saudi Arabia, the State Department chief is expected to fly to Turkey for consultations with the political leadership of this country.

Earlier, CNN and The New York Times, citing its sources, suggested that in the near future the Saudi authorities would officially recognize the death of Jamal Khashoggi, making a special statement on the matter.

The Washington Post, citing US intelligence sources, suggested that the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, had lured journalist Jamal Khashoggi to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. According to the Washington Post, Khashoggi was guaranteed protection from persecution and appointment to a high government position if returned to Saudi Arabia.
