Putin, Erdogan Express Concern over US’s Jerusalem Decision

Why are Putin and Erdogan concerned over US’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel? Will the United States Succumb to International Pressure?

Presidents of Russia and Turkey – Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan – expressed serious concern over the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in a telephone conversation. This was reported by the press service of the Kremlin.

“On both sides, serious concern is expressed about the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the announcement of plans to transfer the American embassy from Tel-Aviv” Such steps could hinder the Middle East peace process, “the report said.

Putin, Erdogan Concerned over US Decision

In the course of the conversation, initiated by the Turkish side, Erdogan informed Putin about the convening of an emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Istanbul devoted to the situation around Jerusalem.

The leaders of both the countries noted the inadmissibility of further escalation of tension in the region. In their view, the efforts of the international community should be aimed at facilitating the resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations in order to find a mutual agreement and solution to all the problems.

 “The commitment of Russia and Turkey to achieve an impartial and viable solution to the Middle East crisis is confirmed on the basis of, first of all, the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, and the realization of the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own state,” the press service noted.
