Presidents of Russia and France, Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron, in a telephonic conversation, spoke in favour of resolving the situation around North Korea exclusively with political and diplomatic means, by resuming direct talks.
“Both Putin and Macron were unanimous in the opinion that the further escalation of tension on the Korean peninsula, fraught with irreparable consequences, and the need to resolve this extremely difficult situation exclusively through political and diplomatic means, through the resumption of direct talks, is unacceptable,” the Kremlin press service reported.
Putin and Macron also discussed the situation in Syria, including the creation of de-escalation zones and a political settlement in that country. “Both sides noted the need to further promote the political settlement of the Syrian crisis, and expressed readiness to increase Russian-French coordination, including within the framework of the Geneva process under the auspices of the United Nations,” the report said.
As noted in the Kremlin, during a thorough exchange of views on Syria, Putin told his French counterpart “about the recent successes achieved by the Syrian armed forces with the support of the Russian military and intelligence agency in the fight against terrorist groups in this country.”
In turn, Makron, as reported in the Kremlin, “promoted the French proposal to establish a contact group on Syria with the participation of the permanent members of the UN Security Council and other states that could affect the normalization of the situation.”
As a result of the telephone conversation, both Putin and Macron agreed to intensify contacts on the international and bilateral agenda “at both the higher and the other levels.”
“School truce” in Ukraine
Touching upon the situation in Ukraine, the heads of the two countries noted the importance of strict observance of the so-called “school armistice”. The telephone conversation between Putin and Macron also noted the importance of full and unreserved compliance by all the parties involved.
