On Monday, Syrian Transport Minister Ali Hammoud said at a meeting with the Russian delegation that Syria plans to build a new international terminal at Damascus Airport, which in the future will be able to receive up to 15 million passengers a year. He expressed confidence that “Syria will become the transit hub of the Arab region.

“There were Russian organizations, the business community, which are ready to invest in Damascus airport and specialize in building terminals and airport infrastructure. Negotiations were on this,” said Dmitry Belik. He added that the issue of launching direct flights from Syria to the Crimea and Sevastopol was also discussed.

According to Belik, the Syrian authorities are interested in organizing tourism trips to Crimea for the residents of the country, while resorts and tourist facilities in safe areas of Syria may be attractive to Russians.

He clarified that in Syria there are enough interesting places for tourists, which are located in safe areas. Tartus itself is located on the seashore and can be considered a resort town. And Crimea and Sevastopol, in turn, can offer interesting sites for tourism, which has a number of historical sites.

Earlier it was reported that this week the Russian delegation, which included the governor of Sevastopol, Dmitry Ovsyannikov and deputy Belik, visited the Syrian Arab Republic. The authorities of Sevastopol and the Syrian province of Tartus have signed a cooperation agreement. As noted by Belik, Syrian President Bashar al-Asad at a meeting with the delegation of the Russian Federation expressed his intention to visit the Crimea and Sevastopol and “expand cooperation, including in the tourism sector.”
