A Russian Army contingent arrived in Islamabad to take part in the bilateral military exercise named “Druzhba-5”, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations announced on Thursday.

The exercise would continue for about two weeks till November 21 and would enhance compatibility among the two armies in the counter-terrorism operations domain.
The Russian contingent comprised of 150 members with over 70 from the Special Forces. The nearly month-long preparation for the exercises include reconnaissance, search and ambush actions, camouflage and covert movement on terrain as well as the arrangement of long-term observation posts and survival in isolation from the main forces.
“Russian Federation Special Forces’ contingent arrived in Pakistan for 2 weeks long joint exercise DRUZHBA 5. The exercise is aimed at sharing both armies experiences in the counterterrorism domain. Sky diving & hostage rescue operations will be highlights of exercise,” said the statement on the DG-ISPR handle.

In September, the Pakistani Army also took part in the Russian Kavkaz-2020 military exercise, where the involved armies focused on combatting cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. It also featured 250 tanks, up to 450 mechanized infantry fighting vehicles, and around 200 artillery systems on the firing grounds.

Druzhba, signifying “companionship” in Russia, is an annual exercise that is held among Pakistan and Russian Armies since 2016 with an intention to share battle strategies and activities and improve co-activity between the two nations. Pakistan and Russia are frequently engaged with different worldwide wargames to improve their military ties like Tsentr held a year ago.
