For now, Russia and Saudi Arabia are discussing the terms of the implementation of the contract for Russian S-400 air defence missile systems, a spokesman for Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation told Rusian News Agency – Tass at the Dubai Airshow 2019.

“A contract for the supplies of the S-400 Triumf systems was signed with Saudi Arabia in 2017. Currently, we are negotiating with the partners mutually acceptable terms for the enforcement of this contract,” the spokesman said.

Reports about Russia’s and Saudi Arabia’s striking a deal for supplies of Russian S-400 missile systems came in October 2017.

Russia’s S-400 ‘Triumf’ is the most advanced long-range air defence missile system that went into service in Russia in 2007. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles, and can also be used against ground installations. The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km.

The attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities earlier in the year a disaster for both Riyadh and Washington, with weapons dodging expensive U.S. missile defence systems.

But in Moscow, news of the attack was greeted as yet another chance to mock the United States and its allies – all while extolling the virtues of Russia’s own missile defence technology.

“We still remember the fantastic U.S. missiles that failed to hit a target more than a year ago, while now the brilliant U.S. air defence systems could not repel an attack,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Friday. “These are all links in a chain.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Turkish and Iranian leaders went further by suggesting that Saudi Arabia would have been saved from Saturday’s attack if they had purchased a missile defence system made by Russia.

“The political leadership of Saudi Arabia just needs to make a wise state decision,” Putin said on Monday, pointing to the purchase of the S-300 missile system by Iran and the S-400 missile system by Turkey.
