As reported by the South China Morning Post, Chinese Military is developing unmanned submarines based on the concept of artificial intelligence. The robotic submarines are expected to be deployed by 2020 and they would give China an unprecedented leverage over the western influence in the disputed international waters like the South China Sea.
China is planning to develop submarines which are smart, efficient and low cost and can bolster its naval power effectively. These submarines will be capable of conducting a wide range of operations varying from reconnaissance to placement of mines and even lethal suicide attacks against the vessels of the enemy present in the sea.
These submarines are seeing as posing a great challenge to the advantageous positions that the west has in the South China Sea and other disputed maritime regions. These unmanned submarines, however, do not intend to completely replace manned submarines.
This Artificial Intelligence submarine programme is a part of the government’s plans to bolster the naval might of the nation using the privileges of Artificial Intelligence. China has also set up the world’s testing facility for surface drone boats in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
The developers in the Chinese military are also trying to develop artificial intelligence based support systems commanders and crew of its submarines. These support systems will make the captains make smart, sharp and quick decisions during times of combat. The submarines will have no human crew onboard. These will set out the sea, complete their missions and return to the base on their own.
