Swaraj was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was admitted to the emergency ward and was in a very critical condition

She was the second woman to take charge of the foreign ministry after Indira Gandhi. However, ill health forced her to step out of politics. Last November, she declared that she will not be contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Sushma Swaraj rose to prominence under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, she is perhaps most famous for living up to Vajpayee’s doctrine of winning the people’s hearts. As the foreign minister in the first Modi cabinet, Swaral’ compassionate method of handling made her very popular.

India’s Congress party extended its condolences on Swaraj’s demise. “We are saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Smt Sushma Swaraj. Our condolences to her family and loved ones,” the party’s official Twitter account said.

Pakistan’ Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry also offered his condolences to the deceased minister’s family, saying that he will “miss Twitter melee with her”. He went on to say that Swaraj “was a giant in her own right”

A number of senior BJP leaders, including Rajnath Singh, Jagat Prakash Nadda, Nitin Gadkari and Prakash Javdekar, rushed to AIIMS. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and said it was a personal loss for him. “Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters and admirers in this very unfortunate hour. Om Shanti,” he wrote
