Wimbledon Player Fined £45,000 For Bad Performance; Does Indian Team Deserve The Same?

Bernard Tomic has been fined $45,000 for his terrible first-round match at Wimbledon which he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga this week. The Aussie surrendered 6-2 6-1 6-4 in just 58 minutes to hand victory to Tsonga in the second-shortest men’s singles match at the All England Club since records began in 2002.

Petition Filed In Pakistan Court For Cricket Teams Terrible Performance Against India

Tomic has been stripped of his prize money because the tournament referee didn’t believe his performance was up to grand slam standard. “All players are expected to perform to a professional standard in every grand slam match. With respect to first-round performance, if in the opinion of the referee the player did not perform to the required professional standard, the referee may determine that the player be subject to a fine of up to first-round prize money,” a statement read.

“It is the opinion of the referee that the performance of Bernard Tomic in his first round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not meet the required professional standards, and therefore he has been fined the maximum amount of £45,000 which will be deducted from prize money.”

Tomic has a history of tanking and his meek surrender to Tsonga — compounded by the maximum fine a player can receive in the first round — will cast the future of his career into further doubt as he battles sagging motivation levels. English sports writer Oliver Brown, who blasted Tomic as “pathetic” after his defeat, said the punishment fit the crime after the “disgraceful display”.

Indian Cricket Team Loses To England

England cricket team defeated India in the World Cup league match and ended their unbeaten streak. However, the Indian loss has not gone down well with the Pakistani fans who have accused India of losing the match deliberately.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli worked towards a slow and steady 138-run partnership for the third wicket while pursuing the English total. Rohit smashed his 3rd World Cup hundred while Kohli hit his 5th consecutive fifty. The chase was tough, but Hardik Pandya’s cameo still kept the hopes alive for India before he also succumbed to tight English bowling.

But a slow approach from former captain MS Dhoni and Kedhar Jadhav took the match away from India. Pakistan netizens were quick to criticize Dhoni and Jadhav accusing the duo of making no attempt in last five overs to chase the target and ensuring that Pakistan does not qualify for the semi-finals.

Even the commentators including former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly criticized the team for making no attempt to win the game and taking singles when boundaries were required. The Indian performance was also lambasted by senior Pakistan players and TV commentators including bowling legend Waqar Younis and Basit Ali.

Bernard Tomic has now been fined £45,000 for his unprofessional and timid performance, should Indian cricket also be fined for their meek surrender to the English side?  And what about once table-toppers New Zealand who also succumbed to their worst defeat in the world cup?
