Tillerson Warns Pakistan to Eliminate Terrorism

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in stern words to Pakistan’s top leadership that they will have to make more efforts to eliminate active terrorists in the country. Tillerson arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday and his visit is considered to be important in terms of reducing the tension between the two countries after US President Donald Trump accused Pakistan of providing safe havens to terrorist organizations.

In a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khakan Abbasi, Tillerson also discussed the important role of Pakistan in enhancing economic and bilateral cooperation and partnership between the US and Pakistan.

Will Pakistan Eliminate Terror Safe Heavens?

Abbasi presided over an inter-agency meeting that included Foreign Minister Khwaja Asif, Home Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Defense Minister Surim Dastigir Khan, Foreign Secretary Tahmina Janjua, Army Chief General Kamar Javed Bajwa, ISI Chief Lieutenant General Navin Mukhtar and other officials joined. The American Embassy in Pakistan said that Tillerson repeated the same message of President Trump, in which he had said that Pakistan should increase its efforts to eliminate terrorist organizations operating from Pakistan’s soil.

Prime Minister Abbasi, who is facing immense pressure to eliminate the safe haven for terrorists in Pakistan, assured US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that his country is committed to the fight all forms of terrorism.

According to sources, Abbasi told Tillerson before the talks in the closed-door room that, “America can be assured that we are a strategic partner in the fight against terrorism and today Pakistan is fighting the biggest war in the world against terrorism.” Abbasi said that Pakistan is committed to the fight against terrorism.

Tillerson’s Pakistan visit is going on a few days after his strategic speech about growing strategic relations with India and highlighting India’s major role in the war-torn Afghanistan by US President Trump.
