Later, the National Security and Defense Council specified that initially, 169 people checked in for the flight, but two did not board. According to Interfax-Ukraine, their identities were not specified and it is only known that they were not the citizens of Ukraine.

Additionally, as reported by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vadim Pristayko, there were 82 Iranian citizens, 63 Canadians, 10 Swedish, 4 Afghans and 3 citizens of the UK and Germany.

Earlier, a Ukrainian airliner crashed soon after taking off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini airport on Wednesday, killing all people on board. The Boeing 737 belonging to Ukraine International Airlines crashed near the airport and burst into flames.

Ukraine’s embassy in Iran said the plane had suffered engine failure and the crash was not caused by “terrorism”. Iranian media quoted an Iranian aviation official as saying the pilot of the airliner did not declare an emergency.
